USL Super League Team of the Month – November

The USL Super League announced the Team of the Month for November on Thursday, with Dallas Trinity FC midfielder Samantha Meza earning Player of the Month. 

Meza played all 360 minutes of Dallas’ four matches, helping the team to an undefeated 3-0-1 record in November. Meza scored what would be the game-winner less than three minutes into the match against Carolina Ascent FC on Nov. 23. The honor is Meza’s first Team of the Month selection this season. 

“I’m really thankful that the USL Super League was created to provide plenty of more opportunities for women to play,” said Meza on USL Super League Game Week on Sirius XM. “It has allowed me to get some games in, get some more experience in, because you can never out-beat playing. You can train all you want, but the playing experience is awesome.” 

GK: Hope Hisey, Spokane Zephyr FC – The University of Arizona alum was nearly unstoppable in goal this month. Hisey recorded five saves, two clean sheets and 83% save percentage after allowing just one goal. 

D: Vicky Bruce, Carolina Ascent FC – Bruce led the team with 15 clearances and 87% passing accuracy while earning her first assist of the season from the backline. 

D: Madison Wolfbauer, DC Power FC – The centerback earned her second Team of the Month honor after recording a team-high 10 clearances and six tackles won. Wolfbauer also started the play that led to the stoppage-time game-winner against Fort Lauderdale.  

D: Vivianne Bessette, Tampa Bay Sun FC – The USF Bull also recorded her first assist in the 2-1 win over Carolina Ascent while also ending the month with 12 clearances and four chances created in 270 minutes played. 

M: Carlee Giammona, Tampa Bay Sun FC – Giammona put the Sun on the board in the 1-1 draw with FTL UTD and scored the game-winner in their next game to hand Carolina its first loss of the season. She also ended the month with five shots and four chances created from the midfield. 

M: Samantha Meza, Dallas Trinity FC – The Dallas native recorded her second goal of the season in the 1-0 win over Carolina. Meza led the league in duels won (38) while also winning six tackles and maintaining over 83% passing accuracy. 

M: Amanda Allen, Lexington SC – The Canadian international was all over the field for Lexington this month. Allen had a team-high 13 shots, won 27 duels and created three chances for the Girls in Green this month. 

M: Felicia Knox, Fort Lauderdale United FC – The Alabama alum created four chances, sent in 13 crosses and won 10 duels while keeping 80% passing accuracy. 

F: Gracie Brian, Dallas Trinity FC – Brian moved her way into the starting lineup after scoring the game-winner off the bench in the comeback 3-2 win over Lexington. The TCU alum also won 23 duels and 70% of her tackles, recorded six shots and made five clearances. 

F: Luana Grabias, Brooklyn FC – The Brazilian striker made the most of Brooklyn’s lone match of November. Grabias scored the league’s fastest hat trick while winning five duels and recording six shots. 

F: Natasha Flint, Tampa Bay Sun FC – The English forward scored her first two goals of the season and recorded 11 shots, 10 duels won, three interceptions and two chances created in November. 

Coach: Denise Schilte-Brown, Tampa Bay Sun FC – Schilte-Brown led the Sun to an undefeated month (2-0-1), with its most impressive win ending Carolina Ascent’s 11-match unbeaten streak.

Goal and Assist: In addition to Hamid’s record-breaking goal, the winger recorded her first assist of the season.
Goals: Dallas’ Allie Thorton netted her fifth goal, which put her only one away from league-leader FTL UTD’s Addie McCain. However, McCain went on to score the game-winner, making her total on the season 7 and extended her lead in the Golden Boot race.

WEEK 17 STORYLINES

FASTEST GOAL…AGAIN 
In Week 15, Dallas’ Sam Meza scored in the 3’ to claim the fastest goal in Super League history.  

Just one week later, FTL UTD’s Jasmine Hamid set the new record, netting a goal at the 1 minute and 49 second mark.

MCCAIN NETS HER SEVENTH 
FTL UTD’S Addie McCain scored the game-winner against Dallas in Week 16 in what was her league-leading seventh goal of the season.  

INAUGURAL WEEKEND DEJA VU 
Two of the matches this weekend will be rematches from the inaugural weekend of the Super League season back in August. Fort Lauderdale and Spokane split points 1-1 at ONE Spokane Stadium, while Tampa Bay Sun and Dallas Trinity also ended in a 1-1 draw down at Riverfront Stadium.  

COACHING CHANGE IN THE CAPITAL 
DC Power FC announced it mutually parted ways with head coach Frédéric Brillant. Current assistant coach Phil Nana will now serve as interim head coach. The club will conduct a permanent head coach search after the new year.

Fall Finale | The Final Two Weeks of the Fall Schedule

The first half of the USL Super League inaugural season has had it all: an 11-match unbeaten streak, nail-biting finishes in stoppage time, and incredible saves to preserve shutouts. And as we look ahead to the final two weeks of the Fall Schedule, we want to celebrate this historic milestone.  

Week 17 will feature three matchups before the Fall Schedule culminates on December 14 with all eight clubs getting in on the action. So, get cozy and prepare for all the Super League action during the Fall Finale!

Fighting for first

The battle at the top of the table continues to get tighter after Carolina dropped back-to-back matches and Brooklyn continues to ride a four-match win streak. Dallas also had an opportunity to jump to second place but fell 2-1 to Fort Lauderdale last weekend. The final two weeks, especially the matchup between Dallas and Brooklyn on the 14th, will decide which of those three clubs will finish the fall in first place. 

Who can start a streak? 

Tampa Bay, Fort Lauderdale and DC Power are all entering the Fall Finale coming off a win. The three teams are also in fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively, with three points separating them. The next two weeks will show if either team can build some momentum from their recent victory and move their way up the table. 

The Girls in Green 

Lexington may be at the bottom of the standings for now, but with two matches left, anything can happen. The team is closing out the Fall Schedule at home against two teams that it is seeking redemption against. Lexington also is the only club to have not earned a clean sheet, and its best chance to do so is against DC Power, which has been shutout a league-high eight times this season. 

Road Warriors

Spokane Zephyr will travel to its fifth and sixth consecutive away matches when it takes on the two Florida-based teams this month. Spokane’s last three results have been draws, but two wins to close the fall could catapult the team above the playoff line. 

Super League Power Rankings – Week 15

There was little movement in the standings this week as Dallas continued impressing with a draw and a win, while DC Power’s Anna Bagley scored her first of the season to snap the team’s two-match losing skid. 

If you tuned in late or left early during Saturday’s matches, you might have missed the game-winners. Sam Meza recorded the fastest goal of the season, putting Dallas on the board in just two minutes and 57 seconds. Only five players this season have scored goals in the first 10 minutes of the match: Sydny Nasello (5’), Madison Wolfbauer (6’), Kailey Utley (7’), Mia Corbin (8’) and Addie McCain (9’). 

On the other end, Bagley’s goal was in the second minute of second-half stoppage time. It was the second time DC Power won 1-0 on a stoppage time goal, and the sixth goal scored after the 90-minute mark: Natasha Flint (90+2), Anna Henderson (90+3), Allie Thornton (90+4), Sydney Shepherd (90+4), and Kimberly Mendez (90+10).

3		 Trinity secured four of the six points up for grabs in last week’s two matches, extending its undefeated run to seven matches. Despite earning a win on the road, Dallas looks a little stagnant offensively and will need to be more creative in its attack if it wants to turn the draws into wins.
4 Carolina Ascent FC

Last Week:
4		 Unfortunately for the Ascent, they’ve had back-to-back matches against the two teams that are currently looking the best they have all season. Carolina’s offense looked good on Saturday, but Dallas’ defense was always just one step ahead, and Carolina couldn’t find the equalizer.
5 Spokane Zephyr FC

Last Week:
5		 Spokane has a lot of depth and can bring in players off the bench that immediately impact the game. The team is also great in transition as well as building out of the back. However, the team is still just not quite clicking and is unable to convert on goal to come away with results.
6 DC Power FC

Last Week:
8		 DC Power pulled out a much-needed win on the road after dropping back-to-back matches at home. Some lineup changes have proven to be beneficial for the team and moments of brilliance from Morgan Aquino and Anna Bagley secured the 1-0 victory on Saturday.

Last Week:
7		 Offensively, Lexington has been unstoppable in front of goal, scoring in its last seven consecutive matches. However, its defense has been its Achilles heel and should be its point of focus over the next few weeks before it takes on the powerhouse of Brooklyn.
8 Fort Lauderdale United FC

Last Week:
6		 Fort Lauderdale frequently finds itself on either side of a last-minute goal, but it was on the losing end this past weekend against DC. FTL struggles to maintain its composure and keep an organized defensive shape for the full 90 minutes, causing the team to slip down the league standings.

Lexington’s Marykate McGuire scored the 100th Super League goal in league history in Week 14.  

WEST VIRGINIA CONNECTION 
Dallas’ Enzi Broussard and Spokane’s Julianne Vallerand played together for West Virginia University’s women’s soccer team in 2019, and both were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team. 

TARHEEL TEAMMATES 
Defenders Amber Brooks (DAL) and Vicky Bruce (CAR) were teammates in 2012 at one of the top collegiate programs in the country – the University of North Carolina Tarheels. The pair won the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament Championship in 2012, which is the last time the university won the title.

Brooklyn, Tampa Bay sit atop standings after strong wins 

The top of the goalscorers list is getting crowded. Three different players recorded their fourth goal of the season across Week 14’s three matches, and they all contributed to earning results. 

The headlining act was Brooklyn’s Luana Grabias scoring the club’s first and the league’s quickest hat trick. The Brazilian striker found her stride at the end of the first half, and after zigzagging past DC’s entire backline, she slotted in three goals in 13 minutes, catapulting her from one to four goals to become the team’s leading scorer. 

Wednesday night’s other matchup saw Lexington’s Marykate McGuire score a late equalizer to earn a point at home against Spokane. McGuire came in as a substitute but immediately impacted the game and recorded the 100th goal in Super League history. 

The final goal of the week came from Tampa Bay Sun’s Carlee Giammona, which proved to be the game-winner and the goal that handed Carolina Ascent its first loss of the season. Giammona combined once again with Sydny Nasello, beat three defenders and nudged the ball past the goalkeeper to put the Sun on top. 

Fort Lauderdale’s Addie McCain (6) and Lexington’s Madi Parsons (5) remain at the top of the pack, but the Golden Boot race is wide open, and anyone can slide into first place before the end of the Fall Schedule.

2		 Although Carolina’s undefeated run came to an end, the team didn’t go down without a fight. Rylee Baisden finally got on the scoresheet and Vicky Bruce was close to getting another to her name, but the defense was no match for Tampa Bay’s offensive firepower.

Last Week:
5		 This six-match road trip for Spokane could be going worse, but it should be going better. Wednesday’s match was the second in a row where the Zephyr dropped points they should’ve earned and now have to face a red-hot Dallas Trinity.

Last Week:
6		 Fort Lauderdale secured a late draw in Week 13 that will hopefully kickstart some momentum as it closes out the fall on a five-match homestand. The big three of Addie McCain, Jasmine Hamid and Sh’Nia Gordon have been quiet recently, so it’s crucial for the team to get them more involved against DC this Saturday.
7 Lexington SC

Last Week:
8		 Lexington has so many offensive threats who have stepped up to the plate this season, most recently Marykate McGuire, earning a draw with an 86th minute goal last week. The team has three weeks to get the defense on that same page before facing Brooklyn.

Last Week:
7		 A complete defensive collapse within 15 minutes resulted in DC Power losing a fourth home match. Miscommunication along the backline combined with the inability to convert in front of goal is a recipe for disaster unless something changes for DC.

What we learned from Week 14 in the USL Super League

Week 14 saw Tampa Bay Sun hand Carolina Ascent its first loss of the season, and who else but Lexington scored the 100th goal in Super League history. 

Here are the biggest three takeaways from last week’s matches: 

Carolina hit a plateau and Tampa Bay is on the rise 

Sooner or later, someone was going to end Carolina Ascent’s undefeated run, but it’s actually not much of a surprise Tampa Bay Sun FC was the one to do it. The Ascent have looked a little out of sorts and barely scraped a couple points out of its last few matches, while the Sun have started to take form with their new roster additions. 

Going back to Ascent’s draw against Dallas on October 25, Carolina was one offside call away from losing 3-2, on top of the Trinity outshooting Carolina 19-4. The team was fortunate DC Power missed a penalty kick in its next match as Meagan McClelland single-handedly preserved the 1-0 win. Then against Spokane, the Zephyr hit the woodwork three times in a scoreless draw at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Carolina’s once-ironclad defense was destroyed on Saturday by Tampa Bay’s balls over the top. At the same time, the Ascent’s offense has fallen flat and struggled to create good looks on goal. 

Meanwhile, the Sun have bounced back from two losses at the end of October with three strong performances. Cecilie Nielsen and Natasha Flint were the perfect targets to put into a starting lineup that was failing to capitalize on its final third entries, especially combining with the speed and agility of Carlee Giammona and Sydny Nasello. Viv Bessette and Paige Almendariz were all over the pitch Saturday night, and Carolina couldn’t progress through the midfield because of them. The two teams are on complete opposite trajectories, which made for a perfect storm and thrilling upset. 

Lexington needs to find Amanda Allen more often 

Madi Parsons has likely been the top player on the scouting report for Lexington’s opponents recently, but last Wednesday’s match brought another name into the spotlight. Orlando Pride loanee Amanda Allen recorded eight shots – four of which were on target, three more of which were blocked – and two chances created against Spokane. Aside from the equalizer, nearly every opportunity Lexington had came through Allen. 

This is not to say that she is just now showing her abilities. Allen is second on the team in shots with 14 behind Parsons’ 19 while having played three fewer matches, and she is third in chances created. However, she had been playing more centrally, and her move out wide completely opened up the field for Lexington against Spokane. Allen has so much speed and skill that she can either cut inside and rip a shot, or she can beat her defender and send a cross into the box. Continuing to get her involved in the attack will result in even more goals for this high-scoring team. 

DC needs help at both ends of the field 

It’s no secret DC Power has struggled with efficiency at the offensive end; the club has the fewest goals in the league (6) while recording the third-most shots (132). Two of those goals came from penalty kicks in the same match. Another one was an own goal by the opposing team. Every time a DC player has a breakaway and is 1v1 with the goalkeeper and you think a goal is on the horizon, it’s not. Credit to Brooklyn’s Sydney Martinez for the five saves in Wednesday’s match, but one of those has to go in if DC wants to turn its season around. 

And things are not much better on the other end of the pitch. DC took a page out of Lexington’s book and allowed three goals within a span of 13 minutes last week. Again, Luana Grabias deserves all the recognition for three well-deserved and entertaining goals; however, the turnovers in the defensive third and the inability to clear lines followed by the immediate arguing and finger-pointing after conceding is not a good look for the backline.

DC – Susanna Friedrichs: The VCU alum has played a crucial role in DC’s backline, but she is also not afraid to get into the attack. Friedrichs recorded two tackles and a clearance while maintaining over 80% passing accuracy in the match against Carolina. 

BKN – Luana Grabias: Whether the Brazilian international is in the starting lineup or coming off the bench for Brooklyn, she brings incredible speed and skill to its frontline. She earned her first goal and had four shots in the team’s last win against Spokane.

  • Lexington’s Madi Parsons has contributed to at least one goal in the team’s last five matches. She leads the league with nine goal contributions. 
  • Lexington is still looking for its first shutout of the season.

LEX – Shea Moyer: Lexington’s captain has been holding down the midfield and is a facilitator on the field. Last week, she blasted home her second goal of the season from the penalty spot while recording four duels won, two tackles, two clearances and an interception. 

SPK – Emina Ekić: Now that the Bosnian midfielder is back from international duty, the team can return to using Ekić as its primary playmaker. In the draw against Carolina, she recorded two shots (one hitting off the crossbar), five tackles and created one chance.
