Fort Lauderdale slingshots into the top spot on the heels of a three-match win streak
And just like that, Brooklyn’s five minutes of fame are up. Fort Lauderdale United came in and snatched the top spot in this week’s rankings after extinguishing the red-hot New York side 1-0 on Sunday. It was FTL UTD’s third win in a row and Brooklyn’s first loss.
For the first time this season, someone other than Addie McCain and Jasmine Hamid scored for Fort Lauderdale. It was 18-year-old Reese Klein, who subbed in for Laveni Vaka in the 38th minute.
In fact, it was a big week for players coming off the bench. Tampa Bay Sun’s Sydny Nasello entered last Wednesday’s match in the 26th minute and immediately provided a spark for the visitors. She contributed to both goals scored by Cecilie Fløe Nielsen to give the Sun its second win of the year. On Sunday, it was second-half substitute Kimberly Mendez who scored the stoppage-time equalizer for Lexington SC.
Everyone knows the big names on the teams by now, the ones who can score hat tricks and will punish their opponents if given time and space. But the teams that have depth and have players willing to step up in big moments are the ones most likely to get the results they need.

Summary |
|
1 | Fort Lauderdale United FC (3-1-1) Week 9: @ TB |
2 Last Week: 3 |
Rain or shine, home or away, Fort Lauderdale has proven to be one of the top teams in the league over the last few weeks. FTL UTD has a lot of depth and talent all over the field, making it one of the toughest squads to beat.
2 | Dallas Trinity FC (2-1-2) Week 9: — |
2 Last Week: 4 |
Dallas needed to bounce back after its Week 7 loss, and it did just that. The Trinity weathered the early and late efforts of Spokane and found two timely goals that secured them their second win of the season.
3 | Carolina Ascent FC (3-0-3) Week 9: — |
1 Last Week: 2 |
Carolina remains the only undefeated team left, and while it hasn’t been as effective offensively lately, the defense has come up big. Goalkeeper Meagan McClelland and the backline of Bruce, Studer, Merrick and Aguilera are the reasons the Ascent has picked up points in its last two matches.
4 | Brooklyn FC (3-1-1) Week 9: vs. DC |
3 Last Week: 1 |
Brooklyn is still testing out lineups and adjusting to the arrival of new head coach Jess Silva. The team limited a well-rested Fort Lauderdale side to just one goal on Sunday but didn’t make the most of its own opportunities to come away with a result.
5 | Tampa Bay Sun FC (2-1-3) Week 9: vs. FTL |
Last Week: 5 |
It looked a little shaky in the first half of Tampa Bay’s match against DC last week, but once the team settled in, it was the Sun’s game to lose. Sydny Nasello is the play maker for this team and combining her with the skills of Cecilie Fløe Nielsen gives this team a lot more potential.
6 | Spokane Zephyr FC (1-2-3) Week 9: vs. LEX |
Last Week: 6 |
Spokane is always on the brink of getting it done but can never quite connect when it matters most. Ten corners and 18 shots bringing the team only one goal on Sunday is simply not good enough, especially against a team as good as Dallas.
7 | Lexington SC (0-4-2) Week 9: @ SPK |
1 Last Week: 8 |
Lexington has one or two moments in every match when it drops its focus for a second, often resulting in the other team scoring. That own goal on Sunday cost Lexington a chance at earning its first win of the season against the No. 1 team in the league.
8 | DC Power FC (0-4-3) Week 9: @ BKN |
1 Last Week: 7 |
Until DC can figure something out offensively, it will likely remain at the bottom of the rankings. Traveling to face Brooklyn this week will be one of DC’s toughest tasks yet, especially after the brutal loss it just took to Tampa Bay. |
