Leading up to the inaugural USL Super League season kicking off this weekend, we’re dropping five facts about each club. Finally, we have Lexington SC.
1. A brand new stadium is the home site for Lexington this season
Lexington SC announced last year that it was building a soccer-specific stadium in Lexington set to open in time for the USL Super League season. It will initially have a capacity of 7,500 with the potential to expand to a maximum of 11,000. The seven training fields and the stadium will represent an investment of up to $82 million. Buy your tickets for when Lexington will host Tampa Bay Sun in its home opener on Sunday, September 8.
2. Mike Dickey leads the team during its inaugural campaign
Lexington announced in January that Mike Dickey would be the head coach for the inaugural Super League season. Dickey’s coaching background includes serving as the Head Coach for the Jordan Football Association Senior Women’s National Team (2017-2018) and various roles with multiple U.S. youth national teams. He is staying in Kentucky, after recently working as the Director of Coaching & Player Development at Mockingbird Valley Premier SC.
3. Lexington SC utilizes the USL’s player pathway from its pre-professional league
Five players who were a part of Lexington’s USL W League team will be joining the Super League team this season. JJ Aalbue, Kimberly Mendez, Kailey Utley, Trinity Watson and Autumn Weeks helped LSC finish third in the W League’s Valley Division this summer before starting their professional careers with the same crest.
4. New Zealand international Grace Wisnewski first to join the club’s roster
New Zealand midfielder Grace Wisnewski was announced as Lexington’s first Super League signing. Wisnewski joined New Zealand’s U17 team and made multiple appearances before working her way up to the senior squad ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Wisnewski was most recently with A-League club Wellington Phoenix.
5. Lexington SC is fully integrated into the USL ecosystem
With the addition of Lexington’s Super League team, the club has become a part of four different USL properties competing in 2024. Along with the Super League, Lexington has a League One team that recently announced it will move to the USL Championship, a W League team and multiple USL Academy teams.
